Patient Education

At LBI Chiropractic Center, we believe an educated patient is a happier, healthier patient. Take a few moments prior to your visit to review our Patient Education section so you'll better understand our work together.

What is a subluxation?

A misalignment of one or more vertebrae in your back or neck interfering with the normal function of the nerves. Chiropractic work can realign your body for maximum comfort and flexibility.

Does everyone have subluxations?

Yes. Spinal malfunction is caused by stress, overexertion, extensive periods of sitting, improper lifting and a host of other physical activities. Because of our body's innate ability to heal itself, many subluxations correct on their own. Yet sometimes we need the assistance of a chiropractor to make specific spinal adjustments to improve biomechanical function and  eliminate nerve system interference.

Do adjustments hurt?

Most people find just the opposite; they experience a sense of relief after an adjustment. Consider it this way: a misaligned spine causes chronic pain  every day. When your spine is finally aligned properly, it's like a weight being lifted from your shoulders. Your spine is restored to its pain-free and natural condition, leaving you relaxed and relieved.

Occasionally, people with more comprehensive spinal issues report feeling slightly sore after their initial adjustment. This is because long-standing problems require retraining and repatterning of the supporting muscles. This type of discomfort is akin to the soreness you may feel after any physical activity and will generally improve over days.

Remember: some spinal problems took years to develop. It may take some time and mild discomfort to "right" your alignment!

How long will it take until I feel better?

It depends. Some patients feel better after the first adjustment. Other patients may need weeks or months of adjustments to feel relief. Children usually respond more quickly than adults, whose spinal problems are caused from years of misuse or neglect. In addition, lifestyle issues such as exercise and diet all affect overall progress.

Will I need chiropractic care for the rest of my life?

Some spinal issues neglected from childhood may require a lifetime of chiropractic care for optimal functioning. Others may need only a few visits to correct a problem. When chiropractics are looked at as preventive care, consider consistent visits for long-term health management. (Many athletes, for example, consistently integrate chiropractics into their overall maintenance plans. )

Why do I hear a cracking or popping sound during my adjustment?

The sound you occasionally hear during a chiropractic adjustment is created by the sudden shift of normal fluids and gases in a joint. When those trapped gasses and fluids move in response to an adjustment, sounds can occur (similar to when you crack your knuckles). Adjustments near the head and ears can seem louder because denser bones transmit sound more easily.

Should I be able to hear the sound of an adjustment?

Not always. The presence of a sound does not indicate the efficacy of an adjustment.

Can pregnant women or children benefit from seeing a chiropractor?

Definitely. Children and pregnant women can suffer from subluxations and both can benefit from chiropractic care. Pregnant women in particular find adjustments improve lower back support as well as lessen the complications of delivery.  Adjusting methods are adapted to the patient's weight, size and condition.

Can't you get reliant on chiropractic visits?

No, but many integrate chiropractic visits into their health plan for overall health maintenance, similar to periodic dental visits.

"Bodybuilders and fitness people have been using chiropractic extensively in order to stay healthy and fit. I found it was better to go to a chiropractor before you get injured. We are a perfect team - the world of fitness and the world of chiropractors. I am very fortunate to have my in-house chiropractor Dr. Franco Colombo as my own personal chiropractor. So I visit Franco regularly, and he comes over to my house. He adjusts my wife, my kids, me, everybody gets an adjustment. And we feel always great when Franco leaves.

Even when I have athletic injuries, he's always there for me and helps me. So it's really terrific and I know that first hand. That's why I always will be traveling around all over the world talking highly about the profession of chiropractic. You chiropractic doctors are really miracle workers."  - Arnold Schwarzenegger
